What do you do?
My art practice focuses on the effects of time, a sense of belonging, place, memory and our interrelationship with nature combining the disciplines of art, archaeology and science as both a means of research, discovery and inspiration.
All That Remains
Inspired by research into my family history paying particular attention to the female line, archival history of the Lancashire cotton industry (specifically in Preston), Victorian acts of remembrance — using hair to make jewellery and the fact that mitochondrial DNA (passed solely from mother to child) enables female ancestral ‘memories’ to be continued through future generations.
A Moment Becomes a Memory
Both of these pieces are influenced by memory.
A Moment Becomes a Memory #1
Plaster, gold thread, glass bottle & cardboard box
A Moment Becomes a Memory #2
Skull, leaves, rose petals & cardboard box
Masquerade, an investigation into the realm of artscience.
Consideration was made into the relationship between art and science, combining my scientific past with my art by using scientific discovery and methods of research. My intention, to encourage others to engage with these works, to look more closely and to emphasise that things are not always how they appear. Allowing them to superimpose their own interpretations and ideas onto the pieces, enabling them to come to their own understanding of what they are or might be.
